Sherriff, James {I03526} (b. BEF. 15 JAN 1792, d. UNKNOWN)

Note: The entry in the Marriage Register for James & Mary clearly gives the name of the groom as James SHARRA. Neither the bride nor the groom could sign their own names. We have decided that James SHARRA was actually James SHERIFF by the following logic:

James SHARRA married Mary ROGERS at Modbury on 16 July 1811. Mary's sister, Agnes, married Richard SHERIFF at Modbury on 9 October 1811.

James & Mary had three children, one of whom was James SHARRAH, baptised 28th November 1813. In the 1851 and 1891 censuses, there is a James SHERRIFF recorded, listed as having been born in Modbury in 1813-14. There are no SHERRA or SHERRAH entries in either census.

On 2 April 1821, a James SHARRACK married Elizabeth KERSWELL at St. George's Church, Modbury. We have not as yet been able to examine the entry in the Register. There is nothing in the records we have that indicates whether James was a widower or not, but we believe he is the same James who married Mary ROGERS and that this was his second marriage.

James & Elizabeth are recorded in the IGI as having 3 children. Elizabeth SHARRA baptised 27 May 1821, Sarah Kerswell SHARRA baptised 2 Feb 1823, and Mary Ann SHARRA baptised 17 July 1825. The use of the name SHARRA in these baptismal entries conflicts with the name SHARRACK used at the time of marriage, but the use of KERSWELL as a second name would seem to confirm that we have the correct family.

Sarah Kerswell SHERRIFF married Richard DREW at Stoke Damerel on 19 April 1847. We are certain that this is the same Sarah Kerswell SHARRA, although we have applied for a copy of the Marriage Certificate as proof.

It is also interesting that in the 1851 census there is an entry for a Mary DREW, in Bedford Street, Plymouth. Living with her at the time were her sister, Priscilla SHERIEFF aged 49, her nephew James SHERIEFF aged 18 and her niece Kate SHERIEFF aged 12. Visiting them at the time was one Agnes ROGERS, aged 76, a widow and a Gentlewoman. This may be a coincidence, and we have yet to find any data on this family.

In the 1851 census, there is an Elizabeth SHERRIFF, aged 48 (so born around 1803), visiting Henry COLE and his wife Mary Ann COLE at 8 Briton Side, Plymouth, Devon. Elizabeth is recorded as being Married, and a Visitor. At the same time, there is a James SHERIFF recorded as living at Alorn, Kingsbridge, Devon, as a servant to Eliza Wise. James is shown as being Married, but his wife is not recorded at the same address, and he is shown as having been born in 1792 at West Alvington. This would not appear to be consistent with his marriage to Mary Rogers in 1811.

Research into all these issues is continuing.
