Note: James Ross was John and Elizabeth Ross's second child. He was a tailor and supplied uniforms and other material to the Military. When the United States attacked Canada in the 1812-1814 war, James and his wife's brothers joined the Citizens Militia for the defence of York (Toronto). He was briefly taken prisoner by US forces at the capitulation of York but was released when the Americans vacated the place. He afterwards settled on a farm in York Township, 9 miles from the city, where he remained until 1858. The family then moved into the city and lived on Sherbourne Street, where Elizabeth died. He died in 1868. He and Elizabeth had 12 children. James owned 200 acres of land, part of which lay in what later became Forest Hill Village in Toronto. (Source: Susan Parish's tree at Rootsweb)

Note: John Ross was born in Ross-shire Scotland. He was in the Cameron Highlanders 26th Regiment of Foot for over 28 years, 19 of those years as a Sergeant. He sailed from Cork Ireland in 1786 with his wife and 2 children, Mary aged 2 and James, who was born on board the ship. The Regiment arrived in Quebec in 1787 under the command of Colonel Gordon. John was posted to eight border forts during the volutionary war of the New England Colonies and was accompanied on harrowing marches during this time by his family. The Rosses decided to stay in Canada when the Cameronians were recalled to Scotland. John and his family eventually settled in the Town of York in 1798 on Lot 9 Conc. 5 ( on the list of Original Landowners of York Township.) He was Barrack Master in Little York from 1800 until his death in 1805.
