Note: Obituary from a Hawke's Bay paper (source: Kit Withers):
Mrs. Mark JARVIS (Hannah STROUD).
The rapidly diminishing ranks of Hawke's Bay early colonists sustained a further loss last Friday evening, in the passing away of Mrs. Mark JARVIS of Greenmeadows. She was a native of Wiltshire and came out to New Zealand on the sailing ship "Hudson" with her husband 49 years ago. They went to Poketapu, and remained there for about twelve months, after which they moved to Greenmeadows, where she has resided ever since. The late Mrs. JARVIS was of a most kindly and amiable disposition and in the early days, when doctors were hard to get, she willingly assisted many of the pioneer colonists in time of sickness, patiently nursing them back to good health. She took an active interest in the welfare of the district and was ever ready to assist in any good cause. Although having reached the advanced age of 78 years she enjoyed good health and was quite active till within a few weeks of her end. The deceased lady was predeceased by her husband ten years ago, and leaves the following family of five sons and four daughters to mourne their loss: Mrs R Baker (Wellington), Mrs Sylvester (Napier), Mrs Mitchell (Hamilton), Mrs Sanderson (Meeanee), Messrs W G Jarvis (Greenmeadows), C J Jarvis (Napier), M R Jarvis (Greenmeadows), C B Jarvis (Wellington), and T J Jarvis (Greenmeadows). The deepest sympathy is extended to the family by a large circle of friends in their sad bereavement.
The funeral took place at the Taradale cemetery yesterday afternoon, when a large number of the old settlers and friends assembled to pay their last and silent respects. The burial rites were conducted by Rev. Canon A P Clark, who in a few words paid a tribute to Mrs. Jarvis's qualities as a worthy and respected settler. The floral tributes, several of which were sent by the various local bodies, were numerous and beautiful
